05Aug2019 - Osprey Watch at St Patrick`s Island
Few days prior, while on our daily walks through downtown's St. Patrick island, we can't help notice a nest atop an art Installation in that area. Yes, a feathery creature, an osprey took residence atop this $500,000 7-storey street light art installation! The Bloom sculpture was placed on the island years ago as one of the phases of revitalization of inner-city space - and now serves both as a public art, and home to these ospreys.
So this weekend, I brought my entire camera gear including a Canon 100-400mm telezoom lens and headed back to the site, hoping we can catch some action. Our 2 hour watch gave us lots: from their nest housekeeping, to feeding, and to their pooping. Eeeew... gross, you might say! But these guys routinely shoot their poop out over the edge of their nests to keep the nest clean. It is a good 10-feet of chalky projectile into the air (as urine and feces are excreted together).
So note to ourselves: Next time you see an eagle in a nest, watch out when it cocks out its tail !
