12Jan2016 - Bird Watching - Puerto Morelos Mexico
We were just heading back to our suite when we noticed this black Anhinga sun bathing and grooming. Anhingas are like the double-breasted Cormorants except that they have longer bills which they use for spearing fish. Their feathers lack the water-repellent oils that other diving birds have, and their feathers become saturated with sea water when diving for fish. Because of this, they usually sit out under the sun with their wings spread out to dry off.
So I grabbed my 100-400mm telephoto lens and headed back to where the Anhinga was sun bathing. Unfortunately when I got there, she no longer had her wings spread as she was now just grooming. So I waited and stood there for about an hour waiting for the best photo opportunity I can get.
