2012May - Snorkeling - National Reef Park - Puerto Morelos MX
May 10: We took a snorkeling trip aboard a huge catamaran to a national park reef just off the town of Puerto Morelos, compliments to our El Cid Resort club membership.
The fishing town of Puerto Morelos is a popular place for snorkelers and scuba divers. It's just about 20minutes from our resort. In 1968, the reef in front of Puerto Morelos town become a protected national park. This protected National Marine Park is part of the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest reef system in the world and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The reef is only 550 yards offshore, the closest point along the coast of Quintana Roo, and its protected status allows for a great opportunity to view fantastic display of marine life. The National Park required a small entrance fee which companies will collect on top of their cost. Only accredited guides are allowed on the reef and life jackets are mandatory to prevent unintentional damage to the reef. We were given wristbands to wear to show park wardens that the entrance fee was paid.
