Sat Sep 29 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - Taking the Boat To Storage With Aja

With the boat winterized and its oil changed, we are taking this opportunity to bring the boat for storage to Ghost Lake while we still have some warm days left. I certainly do not like doing these when there is white stuff already on the ground!

Sun Sep 23 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - Lake Minnewanka Trail Hike

We are so blessed to have Banff National Park at our doorsteps. This is just one of the many areas we often visit for a quiet, peaceful, scenic get-away.

The trails at Lake Minnewanka is both a hiking and mountain biking trail. The hiking opportunities along Lake Minnewanka area are numerous. The scenery is so beautiful that it takes your breath away.  This is also prime bear country, specially right up to the trails of Alymer Lookout. For most of the part, the trail skirts along the side of the mountain and at times can be a little bit scary particularly if you slip while riding a bike. IMHO, you will need an MTB with a suspension to be biking here.

We went all the way past Stewart Canyon right where the elevation started climbing but decided to head back not because of the elevation gain but because we didn't see any hikers anymore. Instead, we spent most of the time along the Canyon side trails.

Sat Sep 22 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - Banff Tunnel Mountain

Another gorgeous day! Instead of taking the boat out to the lake like we did the day prior, we thought of hiking Banff's Tunnel Mountain area, visit the Hoodoos, hike the trails beyond Bow Falls, and then spend the later afternoon in Lake Vermillion until sunset. We've tried this several times in the past hoping we could catch the perfect moment, the right lighting conditions for a perfect moment of Mount Rundle sunset bliss.

Sat Sep 22 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - Catching Sunset at Vermillion Lake

Another gorgeous day! Instead of taking the boat out to the lake like we did the day prior, we thought of hiking Banff's Tunnel Mountain area, visit the Hoodoos, hike the trails beyond Bow Falls, and then spend the later afternoon in Lake Vermillion unntil sunset. We've tried this several times in the past hoping we could catch the perfect moment, the right lighting conditions for a perfect moment of Mount Rundle sunset bliss.

Around 7:30PM, as the sun started to set beyond the mountains, Mount Rundle started to glow purplish pink. I lost my tripod base plate while we were hiking several hours prior, and now I am faced with this sinking feeling that I might miss this opportunity without a usable tripod. The good thing, I do not give up that easily. So I braced my camera as steady as I could, held my breath, opened the shutter a little longer, and took my shots. I was even surprised that the sunset thing only lasted for about half a minute before it started to lose color. Good thing, I already took my shots while the color was still intensifying!

Fri Sep 21 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - 2012 Last Boating of the Season

We made a conscious decision that the following week after this, we will be winterizing the boat and then park it for storage. That is right, this will be our last boating for this 2012 season.

Fortunately, today's forecast calls for a hot +25C day! We preloaded the boat the night before with our gears and prepared our lunches, ice, drinks, and even a pair of halo-halo, our native version of smoothies.

We had such a good time closing our boating season for the year; and to top if off, waited till late to watch the sunset!

Sun Sep 16 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - Another Try For Kananaskis

This is another try for Kananaskis again after we had to turn back when we got hit by a freak storm few days before. With heavy rain and strong winds that tend to tip the bike over, that was an unpleasant experience! With the proper riding gears, we don't mind the rain at all; besides the outer liners get dry fairly quick while biking. It is the strong wind that scares me! It is this element that we take for granted while in a car.

.. but today is exceptional! A nice day out biking the Kananaskis. Enjoyed the scenery, the occassional stops for wild animals on the highway, and the exciting twisties. We took our lunch to Barrier Lake and then biked the twisties. We headed further out all the way to the next service station, took a break with other bikers while we had our coffee -- in the midst of mountains! On the way back, we took a sidetrip to Mount Lorette ponds and then another stop at Barrier Lake.

Thu Sep 13 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - A Skype Date with Auntie Alyssa

Aja's Skype date with Auntie Alyssa: So we all gathered around a laptop, and that includes our dog, Tuffy, too!

Sat Sep 8 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - Another Perfect Day for Boating

Pretty calm day! No wind. Blue skies. Sunny. Hot 25C. Five short sentences that sum up a perfect day for boating. So off we go, just the two of us and our dog. With just the two of us boating (for now anyways), Nora will now have to learn how to launch the boat while I back up the trailer.

We had a blast!

Tue Sep 4 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - Labour Day Long Weekend - Extended

We discovered a new gem that is fairly close to our place!

Big Hill Springs Trail is less than 30 minutes from our place, located in the Foothills natural region, where a large spring and series of small waterfalls and creeks flow year-round over rocky terrraces of lush growth of shrubs. The mounds of unusual tufa formation and several small waterfalls are the dominant features here. Tufa is a rock that forms when calcium and carbonate-rich water emerges from the ground. As the water comes to the surface, it releases carbon dioxide into the air and forms the calcium carbonate rock, tufa. Apparently, these tufa mounds have been forming for thousands of years and are still forming today. The trail winds through aspen forest and some pine trees. Shorelines of an ancient sea are visible from hereon. There are some areas of the trail, underneath thick trees, where it became muddy but we managed to make detours away from the trail path to higher ground occassionally docking under heavy lush and tree branches.

This 2Km trail loop made a very interesting and quiet stroll for us! Worth the visit.

Sun Sep 2 00:00:00 MDT 2012 - Labor Day Long Weekend

Labor Day long weekend. Forecast for a sunny +20 day! So we packed up the boat early and headed out to the nearest lake, Ghost Lake, just about 40minutes from our place -- only to find out the lake was very choppy. Winds about 37kph. We thought of waiting for a couple of hours...

To kill time, we decided to have our lunch right there at the parking area. Hmmm, we were supposed to have that out on the lake! Two hours later: still windy. Gotta make some decision here! So, we headed home, got on our bike gears and headed out to Canmore instead... We still can save the day and have fun!
